Nuw Idol

Nw Idol (aka Michel Spiegel) has been called a genius by those who should know and anyone who is familiar with his impressive back catalogue and his spellbinding and energetic live performance will undoubtedly agree.

His passion for music began in his teens when he played in bands in his native France. A wicked weekend in London inspired his belief that for him, as a musician it was the only place to be. The late eighties saw him realise this dream, submerged in Vangelis' north London studio he began to hone the craft in which he would excel - translating energy into sound! He established himself as a top engineer lending his distinctive sound and excellent production skills to the likes of DJ Sneak, Binary Finary (he co-produced the massive '1998'), The Shamen (3 lp's), MR C, Killer Loop, Ian Pooley, Stacey Pullen, Kenny Larkin, Sourmash, and DJ Dan...

Meanwhile he carried on writing and producing his own tunes and 1994 saw him launch his act - Nw Idol. The name comes from the peak time clubbing experience and, in his own words, is about "the absolute knowledge that we are free, beautiful and that we are truly celebrating life in the most absolute and potent way; a pagan ritual if you like. Our god is us, and when we move as one to the same beat we invoke that spirit of love and celebration which I call the Nw Idol". He has released tracks on many labels including Plink Plonk, EAR, Aquarius, Cosmic Communication and Zoom with tracks such as 'Deviant' (1997) an early tech-trance fusion attracting the attention of respected DJ's such as Carl Cox who realised its devastating potential.

The need for more control over his music and the freedom to explore his vision encouraged him to set up his own label WellWicked Records in March 1999. His courage was justified when his very first release 'Tears' was caned by the likes of Digweed, Sasha and Christopher Lawrence. The 2nd release 'Polly's Pharmacy' was even better, becoming a standard in every DJs' box, from Pete Tong and Mauro Picotto to John 00 Fleming. It was licensed to many high profile compilations, as are most Wellwicked tracks. Since then the releases have been coming on strong and the label is steadily building its reputation for excellent music . Staking his claim between the worlds of hard house, trance and techno, with a deep progressive element, his hybrid creations have a level of quality and creative excellence which sets them apart. The appeal of Nw Idol is truly universal, his tracks can be dropped in any set to any crowd and rock the house. 'Kick Drum Domination' was enormously popular with underground hard house and trance DJ's and also picked up by Judge Jules for the 'Clubbers Guide to Ibiza 2000 -Ministry Of Sound'.

Unlike many live PA's Nw Idol engages totally with his audience, willing them with his magnetic performance and the flawless weaving together of his awesome tracks to reach that peak clubbing experience where euphoria takes over and all become one. The music, which is inspired by the dancefloor comes truly into its own, steering a headlong course for those moments of dancefloor epiphany when the noise becomes joy and things start to slip away and the ceremony ends in a permanent sea of outstretched arms.

Performances for A/W 2000 include Escape From Samsara at the Fridge, Sublime in Edinburgh, Ripsnorter in Bristol, Pickle and Return To The Source at the Brixton Academy, Dionysis in Sheffield and the Melkweg (Amsterdam) for the Dance Valley crew.
